Not related to this particular crossword, but...
This is how RULINGS (in the last Sunday crossword) is derived:
RU-lings
Decisions - RULINGS
in - connector
game - RU (short for Rugby Union)
good for East in more than one series - use the letter G (good) instead of E (East) in lines (more than one series), getting LINGS

On this crossword...

27 Look briefly around; mischievous boy's leg is broken (7)

GLIMPSE (mischievous boy's=IMP'S, leg=LEG=>mischievous boy's leg is broken = ana. IMPS+LEG -- Don't approve of clues that involve an anagram of synonym(s))

CV: Sorry, I don't understand what you mean here by an anagram of synonym.

As far as I can see it is GL(imps)E
GLE (anag. of 'leg') around IMPS (mischievous boy's)

'Look briefly' is the def. and 'around' is container/contained signal.

Where is the involvement of an anagram of synonym?

2 Italian painter Sebastian, for one (5) RICCI (??)

CV: An abstruse clue.

4 Make an approach to Oriental boy with a pointed beard (7) GOATEED (Make an approach to=GO AT, Oriental=E, boy=ED -- where does the other E come from??)

CV: You have correctly parsed it. GOATEED is Go at + E + Ed. Everything is accounted for, I think.

5 South American shrub, not any Thar growth (7) RHATANY (not any Thar growth = ana. ANY+THAR -- I assume 'not' is the anagram indicator, 'growth' is redundant)

CV: Here I would think that 'not' is a connector and 'growth' is an anagrind, unconvincing though it might be as an anagrind.
